Immerse yourself in the dreamlike, enigmatic world of Jean Marais (1913-1998) with this decorative wall plate in glazed terracotta orange ceramic, featuring a surreal illustration of a face rooted in the branches of a tree as if in a dream, typical of the style of this great multi-talented French artist!
Created between 1970 and 80, Jean Marais is a mythical actor of French cinema. Known for films such as "La Belle et la Bête", "Peau d'Âne" and characters like "Le Bossu", he stands out for an acting talent that blends mystery and action. Influenced by his lover, Jean Cocteau, they shared a common interest in art, particularly illustration, which Cocteau introduced him to. It was finally in 1970, 1973 to be precise, that Marais made a complete change to make the most of his talents in the plastic arts: sculpture, illustrations, but above all ceramics, by moving to Vallauris, and thanks to the help of his friends, the couple Jo and Nini Pasquali, who taught him the art of "turning" his ceramics.
Self-taught, his style is unmistakably his own: fine drawing strokes, as if etched into a decor, blend with the brutality of ceramics as a support for his artistic vision, creating a surreal, dreamlike blend of his own vision of reality. He was one of many artists to contribute to the renaissance of Vallauris ceramics, and to this day remains an iconic ceramist and sculptor. Jean Marais's work is a cross between surrealism and art brut, blending the human and the natural, with a tree with a rooted face.
