Glossy porcelain with platinum and graphic line décor
A refined Rosenthal Studio-Line duo from the “Chiffon” series, designed by French illustrator and designer Alain Le Foll. Created in the early 1980s, the series explores the idea of porcelain as a flowing surface — where graphic lines wrap the body like textile folds or geological strata.
The two vases share the same sculptural language but differ in scale, creating a harmonious architectural pairing.
Form & Structure
Both vessels are based on a softly faceted cylindrical form with subtle vertical ridges. The geometry appears restrained at first glance, yet the faceting creates delicate shifts of light across the glossy porcelain surface.
The smaller vase (model 3085/20) introduces a compact, balanced proportion.
The taller vase (model 3085/28) elongates the form, emphasizing verticality and the flowing movement of the surface pattern.
Together they create a measured dialogue between compression and height.
The “Chiffon” Décor
The decoration consists of extremely fine horizontal linework that gradually thickens toward the base, creating a visual gradient reminiscent of fabric drapery or layered sediment.
Executed in platinum tones over luminous white porcelain, the motif reads almost like topographical mapping or wind-shaped landscapes. The effect is subtle, atmospheric, and distinctly graphic — a hallmark of Alain Le Foll’s approach to surface design.
Unlike the bold metallic Lamina or Goldfeuer decors, Chiffon relies on precision, rhythm, and visual depth rather than dramatic contrast.

Design Context
Alain Le Foll (1934–1981) was a French illustrator known for his richly imaginative graphic language. His collaboration with Rosenthal brought a distinctly artistic sensibility to Studio-Line porcelain during the late 1970s and early 1980s.
The “Chiffon” series reflects this approach: porcelain becomes a graphic field where line, rhythm, and form interact. Rather than dominating the object, the decoration follows the structure of the vessel — enhancing its sculptural presence.
Collector’s Perspective
This duo offers:
• Documented Studio-Line models (3085 series)
• Elegant scale pairing (20 cm and 28 cm)
• Rare platinum line décor
• Strong architectural display presence
• Early 1980s Rosenthal design collaboration
A sophisticated example of late-modern European porcelain design — understated, graphic, and highly sculptural.
