Offered for reupholstering: I have a cool Gispen 1401 Wim Rietveld - A R. Cordemeyer for sale, to be reupholstered by me (furniture upholstery workshop) according to your own wishes!
This design icon features a black frame and the back has a black, flat sheet metal back.
The chair is in beautiful condition.
The Bakelite armrests (completely intact, no chips!) will be restored to their deep black color.
The chairs will look like new again and will fit perfectly into your interior.
I use high-quality fabrics for the chair. For a beautiful wool fabric, consider Bute, De Ploeg, or Kvadrat. Or explore my fabric collection and consider Pierre Frey, Casal, or Dedar.
The price is based on upholstery with De Ploeg-Ploegwool. There is an additional charge for choosing a different fabric and/or upholstering the back as well. A bit more history:
Wim Rietveld (1924-1985), son of the famous architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld, received a technical education. From 1950, Wim Rietveld studied design at the Royal Academy in The Hague. The quality of his graduation work prompted manufacturer Willem Gispen to invite him for a position at the company of the same name, Gispen. At that time, the Netherlands was in the post-war reconstruction phase, and there was a shortage of materials.
Wim Rietveld was employed by Gispen from 1953 to 1957. Rietveld was skilled at balancing functionality and aesthetics and devising simple production techniques. His motto was: ‘Well-formed, solid, practical, and inexpensive’.
In 1956, A.R. Cordemeyer was appointed as a designer alongside Wim Rietveld. He joined the team to design a new, more affordable desk. He was also constantly working on improving existing designs. The Gispen 140 is a predecessor to Rietveld's later design, the 1407. The latter is slightly wider and deeper than the 1401. The 1401 was intended for smaller homes. In the period 1956–1976, Cordemeyer designed many pieces of furniture for the Gispen company, including the AZ office furniture program, but also furniture for the residential interiors of 𝗦𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗼𝗲𝗱 𝗪𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻.
The 𝗦𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗼𝗲𝗱 𝗪𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻 in Amsterdam existed under this name from 1946 to 1968, and subsequently as 'Stichting Wonen' until 1988.
They went to great lengths in their views. The foundation set itself the goal:
To raise the standard of living in the Netherlands by improving home furnishings in the broadest sense of the word, by promoting the production and distribution of furniture, upholstery, household items, etc., that meet certain aesthetic, technical, and social requirements.
An oak smoking chair is wrong; rattan furniture is right. Floral wallpaper and heavy curtains are wrong; white walls and fresh colors are right!
With such instructions, the foundation sought to liberate Dutch interiors from bad taste in the late 1940s. "Taste is a matter of upbringing," was the idea behind the foundation's establishment in 1946.
The foundation promoted modern interiors through model homes and in a magazine. Over the years, 75 model homes were furnished throughout the country. With light furniture in a sleek layout, residents would be able to get the most out of their homes—and thus out of themselves. To save space, the furniture and household items from Goed Wonen often had multiple functions. I will deliver the chairs for free within a 20 km radius.
