Product description
Upholstered: I have a beautiful Gispen 1401 Wim Rietveld - A R. Cordemeyer for sale, ready to be reupholstered to your specifications by me (Huis van ien, furniture upholstery shop)! This design icon has a black frame and a flat black sheet steel back. The chair is in beautiful condition. The Bakelite armrests (completely pristine, no chips!) will be restored to their deep black color. The chairs will look as good as new and will perfectly complement your interior. I use high-quality fabrics for the chair. For a beautiful wool fabric, consider Bute, De Ploeg, or Kvadrat. Or explore my fabric collection and consider Pierre Frey, Casal, or Dedar. The price is based on upholstery in De Ploeg-Ploegwool. Choosing a different fabric and/or including the back upholstery will incur an additional charge. A bit more history: Wim Rietveld (1924-1985), son of the renowned architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld, had a technical education. From 1950, Wim Rietveld studied design at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. The quality of his graduation work prompted manufacturer Willem Gispen to invite him to work for the eponymous company, Gispen. At the time, the Netherlands was undergoing reconstruction and materials were in short supply. Wim Rietveld worked at Gispen from 1953 to 1957. Rietveld excelled at balancing functionality and aesthetics and devising simple production techniques. His motto was: "Well-formed, solid, practical, and affordable." In 1956, A.R. Cordemeyer was appointed designer alongside Wim Rietveld. He joined the team to design a new, more affordable desk and was constantly working on improving existing designs. The Gispen 140 is a predecessor of Rietveld's later design, the 1407. The latter is slightly wider and deeper than the 1401. The 1401 was intended for smaller homes. Between 1956 and 1976, Cordemeyer designed many pieces of furniture for the Gispen company, including the AZ office furniture program, as well as furniture for the 𝗦𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗼𝗲𝗱 𝗪𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻 The 𝗦𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗼𝗲𝗱 𝗪𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻 in Amsterdam existed under this name from 1946 to 1968, then as 'Stichting Wonen' (Living Foundation) until 1988. They were far-reaching in their ideas. The foundation's goal was: To raise the standard of living in the Netherlands by improving home furnishings in the broadest sense of the word, and by promoting the production and distribution of furniture, furnishings, utensils, etc., that meet certain aesthetic, technical, and social requirements. An oak smoked-out chair is wrong; rattan furniture is good. Floral wallpaper and heavy curtains are wrong; white walls and fresh colors are good! With such instructions, the foundation aimed to free the Dutch interior from bad taste in the late 1940s. "Taste is a matter of education" was the idea behind the foundation's founding in 1946. The foundation promoted modern interior design through model homes and a magazine. Over the years, 75 model homes were furnished throughout the country. With light furniture in a sleek layout, residents would be able to maximize their homes and, consequently, their own potential. To save space, Goed Wonen's furniture and utensils often served multiple functions. Within a 20 km radius, I'll deliver the chairs for free. If you live further away, we can discuss the options.

Some minor signs of use on the frame and legs, see photo.
