Product description
A signed Venini 99.80 by Gio Ponti, in the twelve-light multicolour version. One of the most recognisable objects to come out of Murano in the twentieth century, and still one of the most copied.
Ponti designed it in 1946, in the middle of the postwar reconstruction, when Paolo Venini was rebuilding the furnace by inviting architects rather than glassmakers to design for it. Ponti's contribution was to strip the Venetian chandelier of its Baroque clutter — no flowers, no leaves, no pendants — and leave only the essential gesture: a central body, and arms. Then he did the thing nobody had done. He gave every single arm a different colour.
That is the whole idea, and it still works. Blue and red spheres stacked on the stem, a deep green cup below, and twelve arms in emerald, cobalt, amethyst, amber, aquamarine, rose and crystal fanning out around them. It reads as joy before it reads as design. Ponti's own line was that everything in the world should be full of colour, and here he meant it literally.
Every element is free-blown by hand in Murano, which is why no two examples are identical — the colours sit slightly differently in each one. Produced as a numbered edition. Gilded metal structure with chain, adjustable drop.
Condition: Immaculate. No chips, no cracks, no losses. All twelve arms original and complete, all bobèches perfect. Fully working, rewired condition ready to install. Presents as new.
