Gilded Porcelain Vase Trio by Hans Theo Baumann & Tapio Wirkkala for Rosenthal Studio-Line, Germany, circa 1968–1972
An elegant trio of Rosenthal Studio-Line porcelain vases designed by two of the most influential figures in postwar European design: Hans Theo Baumann and Tapio Wirkkala. Executed in glossy white porcelain with refined geometric gold decoration, the ensemble reflects Rosenthal's pioneering vision of combining modern form with artistic innovation during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Although each vase was conceived independently, together they create a remarkably harmonious composition. Baumann's two geometric forms introduce architectural precision, while Wirkkala's softly modelled silhouette adds an organic counterpoint. Unified by their luminous white porcelain and finely executed gilded decoration, the three pieces demonstrate the diversity and sophistication of Rosenthal Studio-Line at its creative peak.

About the Designers
Hans Theo Baumann (1924–2016) was one of Germany's foremost industrial designers, celebrated for his disciplined geometric vocabulary and timeless functionalism. His collaborations with Rosenthal produced some of the company's most enduring modernist porcelain designs, characterised by clarity, proportion, and architectural restraint.
Tapio Wirkkala (1915–1985) ranks among the most influential Scandinavian designers of the twentieth century. Working across glass, wood, silver, and porcelain, he developed an organic design language inspired by Nordic landscapes and natural forms. His Rosenthal designs brought this sculptural sensibility into porcelain, creating objects of remarkable elegance and balance.
About Rosenthal Studio-Line
Established in 1961 under the direction of Philip Rosenthal, Rosenthal Studio-Line became one of Europe's most influential design platforms, collaborating with internationally acclaimed architects, artists, and designers. The programme transformed porcelain into a medium for contemporary artistic expression, producing many of the defining objects of postwar European design.
This trio perfectly captures that spirit. Baumann's two vases embody architectural precision through their pure geometric forms, while Wirkkala's flowing silhouette introduces softness and movement. The delicate gold decoration provides a subtle graphic layer that enhances the forms without overwhelming them, creating an ensemble that feels simultaneously refined, modern, and timeless.
Whether displayed together on a console, sideboard, or shelving system, or arranged individually throughout an interior, the three vases offer exceptional versatility. Their restrained palette complements minimalist, contemporary, Scandinavian, and mid-century interiors alike, while their design pedigree makes them equally appealing to collectors of twentieth-century European porcelain.
A rare opportunity to acquire a carefully curated Rosenthal Studio-Line ensemble by two of the most celebrated designers of the modern era.
