Restored & strongly styled Dutch Design Armchair, better than new
The designer.
Gijs van der Sluis, a self-taught furniture designer with a mechanical engineering background, who started making machine parts for the cigar industry in Culemborg after the Second World War. Due to market demand, he also began designing and producing steel chairs. His passion for technology and high quality standards resulted in successful designs and in the company Van der Sluis Steel Furniture. Some designs are still being released by his grandchildren.
These examples.
This model, numbered No. 12, was intended as a low "lounge" chair—a low-sitting, solidly made, and comfortable piece of furniture.
Thanks to its heavy frame made of solid steel and its fine teak armrests, it is a piece of furniture that truly exudes quality.
The original caps on the legs are still present; these ensure a flat and stable placement on the surface. The frames of these pieces have been completely re-lacquered in high-gloss black, and the teak armrests have been fully refinished and feature a beautiful semi-matte coating.
A completely new filling was also chosen for the seat and backrest, as well as a beautiful, first-class, timeless upholstery fabric of the Odense type in a lovely light grey.
This fabric features a beautiful Bouclé effect and is an ode to the fabrics of the 60s and 70s.
This armchair is exceptionally beautiful in design and execution; strong Dutch Design that is suitable for daily use and is also of very solid quality.
