Gerti Bierenbroodspot (1940)
Bierenbroodspot received training at the Amsterdam University of the Arts, the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam, and the Institute for the Training of Drawing Teachers, also located there. She began painting in the old studio of her uncle Leo Gestel, who died in 1941, in Huizerhoogt, a hamlet in the municipality of Huizen (North Holland). She works as a painter, draughtsman, etcher, and sculptor, among other things; additionally, she designs tapestries and writes poetry. She created the murals for the Holland-America Line cruise ship Rotterdam. Bierenbroodspot's work has been exhibited in various locations in the Netherlands. Outside the Netherlands, she has exhibited in Brussels, New York, Amman, and Beirut, among others.
For many years, Bierenbroodspot was part of the team of archaeologists conducting research in the Jordanian city of Petra. She was also involved in archaeological research in other countries in the Middle East. In 1995, she was knighted by King Hussein of Jordan. In 1998, she was appointed an honorary citizen of the city of Baalbek in Lebanon, where she resided. In 1999, she was appointed a Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion. In 2006, she was a candidate on the Party for the Animals list.
In May 2019, together with refugee children, she created the mural The Great Wall in the Lange Leidsedwarsstraat, Amsterdam.
