Product description
Serafim da Silva Lemos, known as Lemos dos Catalogos, was born on November 24, 1933, in Fanzeres, municipality of Gondomar, Portugal. Son of a master carpenter, Antonio Lemos, he learned the art of visualizing furniture in all its dimensions. After attending the Soares dos Reis Industrial School, he dedicated himself entirely to furniture design. Upon his return from military service, he launched the idea of a catalog of innovative models, which he soon brought to fruition. He was, in his time, the only furniture designer to have compiled his own models into a catalog sold to the public. The author's biography, reproduced on the endpaper, concludes unequivocally: SERAFIM LEMOS is the greatest furniture stylist in the Country. This Catalogo de Mobilias (Furniture Catalog) brings together Serafim Lemos's best creations, the result of 30 years of work, creativity, and perseverance in the service of furniture style in Portugal. It is distributed exclusively by Edicoes IRGON, Apartado 10, 4591 Pacos de Ferreira Codex, Portugal. The full-page color plates depict sets of Portuguese Baroque and Neo-Baroque style furniture, numbered. Plate No. 161 shown presents a complete bedroom: 4-door wardrobe with arched panels, carved canopy bed with a monumental Baroque headboard, 5-drawer dresser, Baroque mirror with a carved frame, crystal chandelier, Persian rug. Each plate is signed Lemos in the bottom right corner. Large-format landscape album, screw binding (2 metal screws on the left side), brown grained faux-leather cover, gilded script title "Catalogo de Mobilias" on the front cover. Worn spine, rubbed corners. Clean interior, vibrant color plates. A unique reference document on Portuguese Baroque furniture from the second half of the 20th century. A collector's item for enthusiasts of design, decorative arts, and Lusitanian furniture history.
