Friso Kramer for Auping – Euroika plywood chair, ca. 1963 Some designs age with the years, while others only become more relevant. This Euroika chair, designed by Friso Kramer for Auping around 1963, undoubtedly belongs to the latter category. At a time when reconstruction was giving way to progress, Kramer designed furniture that did not aim to impress with luxury, but with intelligence. His starting point was as simple as it was revolutionary: less material, more function. The Euroika series was a progressive total concept for the modern bedroom, in which steel and bent plywood came together in a clear, austere design language. It is precisely this combination that makes this chair surprisingly relevant today. The slender steel frame and the beautifully shaped plywood seat and backrest demonstrate the essence of good industrial design: honest, functional, and built to last for generations. The Euroika series was part of Auping’s ambitious design collection from the 1960s, in which the company collaborated with leading Dutch designers and made modern design accessible to a wide audience. While mass production is often synonymous with a throwaway culture these days, this chair proves the opposite. More than sixty years after its creation, the design still feels contemporary.
