Friesian earthenware lump and miniature vase, often referred to as "kerfsnee earthenware" from Workum or Lemmer. These decorative objects are often glossy glazed in vibrant colors such as green, blue, and brown, sometimes in a majolica style. The technique is characterized by incised geometric or floral patterns applied to the clay before firing. They were produced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, for example by the pottery "De Goede Verwachting" in Lemmer. Sustainable and environmentally conscious. By supplementing your interior with vintage items, you are acting in an environmentally conscious manner. After all, no new raw materials need to be used for this product. When you choose vintage, you use what is already available, and that makes it sustainable. You may not be giving these objects a second life, but perhaps even a third or fourth. Vintage products are of high quality and last for several lifetimes for good reason. There is a story behind every vintage product. The often minimal signs of use offer a glimpse into the life of the previous owner. The extent to which these signs of use are present is stated in the description. Photos are part of this description, so please examine them carefully. Vintage (read: used) items sometimes show color variations, uneven wear, and/or normal wear. Please take this into account when making a purchase.
This charming ensemble of Frisian incised earthenware consists of a decorative clog and a miniature vase, manufactured in Lemmer during the first quarter of the twentieth century. The objects illustrate the rich tradition of Dutch folk art, where the characteristic chip-cut technique creates a tangible and visually layered surface.
Both pieces are made of ceramic and feature a vibrant, multi-colored glaze in which shades of green, blue, and brown predominate. The geometric and floral motifs are cut into the clay with precision, resulting in a characteristic relief typical of this regional style. The small lump shows an incised mark on the underside.
The objects are in good condition befitting their age and historical character. Over the decades, the glaze has developed an authentic patina, which contributes to the appearance of these early twentieth-century pieces.
These decorative objects make a refined addition to a collection of Dutch earthenware or serve as a historical accent in a classic or eclectic interior. They look particularly good in a display cabinet or on a sideboard.
