Product description
French Napoleon III Boulle Marquetry Ink Set (Encrier) – Ca. 1860–1880 Give your desk or interior the ultimate touch of 19th-century grandeur with this beautiful French ink set in the Napoleon III style. This refined desk accessory combines traditional craftsmanship, symmetry, and the opulent aesthetic of the Neo-Baroque. Features & Details Craftsmanship: Expertly crafted in France in the period around 1860–1880, entirely in the artisanal tradition of André-Charles Boulle. Inlay: Executed in beautiful Premier Partie Boulle marquetry, where finely cut brass ornaments and arabesques beautifully contrast with a warm, red-colored tortoiseshell background. Fire-Gilded Bronze Fittings: Lavishly set with heavy gilded bronze mounts, refined winged masks on the corners. Layout: Equipped with a central pen rail and two flanking compartments with removable lids, in which the complete inkwells are still neatly present. Condition & Patina Given the age of this antique piece, it displays light, authentic signs of use consistent with an object from the 19th century. Over the decades, the whole has acquired a beautiful, deep patina of age with characteristic craquelé in the tortoiseshell. Special feature: Part of the brass inlay is missing from the right side section, and one small piece is also missing from the left side (clearly visible in the attached photos). Otherwise, the inkwell is in fine and decorative condition. Decorative Value Whether it graces an antique desk, a classic side table, or serves as a unique eye-catcher in an eclectic interior; this inkwell exudes the rich atmosphere of the Second Empire. An absolute statement piece for the connoisseur of French antiques and high-quality bronze work. Period: Approx. 1860–1880 (Napoleon III / Second Empire) Origin: France Materials: Wood, tortoiseshell, brass, gilded bronze and matching inkwells Dimensions: 26cm wide x 18cm deep x 10cm high Weight: 1594 grams
