Freek van den Berg (Amsterdam, May 29, 1918 - Veessen, June 13, 2000) was a Dutch painter. Van den Berg was mainly self-taught. He did receive lessons for some time from artist Frits Giltay and advice from Han van Dam (according to Ed Wingen 1998). In the 1940s, he earned the nickname "the Kees van Dongen of Kattenburg" (Pieter Scheen / "Lexicon of Dutch Visual Artists 1850-1950," 1970). From 1954-1963 he also worked as an art critic for Het Parool, Het Vrije Volk and Vrij Nederland.
Freek van den Berg had three children, the youngest of whom, Roland van den Berg (1950-2007), also became a painter. In 1985 he moved from Amsterdam to the Veluwe IJssel village of Veessen. The direct view of the river and especially the sunrises influenced his work. His colors became lighter in tone. Van den Berg has often been called "the last Dutch fauvist," including by art journalist Ed Wingen of De Telegraaf. But although Van den Berg's work shows kinship with fauvism, he also felt a connection to French impressionism and German expressionism.
