Product description
Pair of antique watercolors on paper depicting forest landscapes in autumnal colors.
Framed under glass: each 40 cm W x 30 cm H x 1.7 cm thick.
Sight dimensions: each 25 cm W x 15.5 cm H.
Some foxing.
Both are signed in the lower left corner by the French watercolorist François-Joseph Girot (1873-1916). Originally from Grenoble, like his friend, the anarchist painter Jules Flandrin (1871-1947), with whom he studied under the master Gustave Moreau (1826-1898) in Paris, he nevertheless broke with the Parisian art scene in 1900 when he took vows at the Benedictine Abbey of En Calcat in Corsica. Girot is known for his autumnal forest landscapes, but also for his works depicting religious figures in their private lives. When the First World War broke out, he volunteered as a chaplain and stretcher-bearer, and was mortally wounded at the Battle of Verdun in May 1916.
