Jean Carzou (1907–2000), whose real name was Karnik Zouloumian, was a French painter, engraver, and set designer of Armenian origin (born in Syria).
After studying architecture in Paris, he devoted himself to painting and became famous for his immediately recognizable figurative style, often described as visionary or dreamlike.
He is known for his stylized landscapes and stark architectural forms, creating a poetic and often fantastical universe populated by ships with complex structures or imaginary cities.
Carzou was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts of the Institut de France in 1977. He also designed sets for major institutions such as the Paris Opera (notably for Les Indes Galantes).
Highly prolific, particularly in lithography, he succeeded in making his art accessible to a wide audience while maintaining a high reputation for his oil paintings and major works.
