Product description
Two elegant ladies face each other in this fashion engraving from Le Petit Courrier des Dames. One wears a midnight blue dress with a full skirt buttoning up to the collar, the other a powder pink crinoline gown adorned with lace, a fan in hand. The floral hairstyles, the garden terrace in the background, and the quality of the drawing accurately recreate the refined atmosphere of the Second Empire. Le Petit Courrier des Dames was one of the most influential fashion magazines of the 19th century. Founded in Paris in 1821, it was published until 1868 and catered to a bourgeois and aristocratic clientele eager to follow Parisian trends. Its plates, engraved on steel and then hand-colored, were produced by artists specializing in fashion illustration. This one bears the signature of the engraver Prérat and the mention of the printer Gilquin et Fils, rue des Fossés-Saint-Jacques in Paris, one of the most active printing houses in the illustrated press of that era. The inscription "Modes de Paris, Petit Courrier des Dames" appears at the bottom of the plate. These plates circulated throughout Europe and served as a reference for dressmakers and their clients. The coloring is meticulous, the tones well-preserved, with no significant fading. The engraving is presented under glass in a gilded frame with a cream mat, ready to hang. Framed dimensions: approximately 30 x 24 cm. Circa . Hung in a hallway, dressing room, or curiosity cabinet, this fashion plate is both a historical document and a decorative object with character, recalling the golden age of the Parisian illustrated press.
