Product description
Large West German ceramic vase with a full rounded body and short neck, finished in a vivid red high-gloss glaze with dark vertical accents and light surface variation. The shape is clean and generous, with the strong color giving the piece most of its character. A striking decorative vase from the mid-century period, with an expressive finish that works especially well as a standalone object.

This piece works through color more than ornament. The rich red glaze gives it an immediate presence, while the soft rounded form keeps it warm rather than harsh. Gerda Heuckeroth was one of the best-known designers associated with postwar West German ceramics. She worked for several major factories, including Ruscha, Ceramano, and from 1964, Carstens Tönnieshof. Her designs are appreciated for combining clear, balanced forms with more experimental surface treatments.
Carstens Tönnieshof was the West German continuation of the Carstens ceramic business, re-established in Fredelsloh after World War II. From the 1950s to the 1970s, it became one of the key names in West German pottery, known for bold forms, expressive glazes, and a strong decorative identity. The company filed for bankruptcy in 1977.
