Fischietto vase, also known as the Whistle, designed by Ettore Sottsass and produced by Habitat GB, 1999-2000. Small model, wide base.
Originally designed in 1962 for the Milanese gallery Il Sestante and reissued by Habitat in 1999-2000, the Fischietto is one of Sottsass's most accessible and poetic pieces. Its ceramic form is both archaic and resolutely modern, its low, wide profile evoking both a whistle and a miniature totem. The light blue glazed body and navy blue rim embody the soft, Mediterranean color palette that Sottsass favored in his later years, a far cry from the colorful provocation of Memphis.
Founder of the Memphis Milano movement in 1981, creator of the Valentine for Olivetti, and winner of nine Compasso d'Oro awards, Ettore Sottsass remains one of the most celebrated figures in 20th-century global design, whose works are featured in the permanent collections of the MoMA in New York, the Centre Pompidou, and the Design Museum in London.
A small, discreet chip on the top and a slight crack in the varnish are consistent with the piece's age.
