This distinct vintage vase was made by Fiorini Pugi in one of the smallest - and richest - countries in the world: Monaco. The design was designed around 1950 and can be called very extravagant! The vase has a thick layer of gray glaze. In France, this type of glaze is called "écume de mer," or sea foam. This textural finish is also known as 'fat lava' glaze. A term more commonly encountered with the famous West Germany vases.
The inside of this Fiorini Pugi vase is glazed in a bright orange color. The decorations appear handmade and show a seahorse among aquatic plants. The orange hues are complemented by details in blue and green. In short: a unique piece with character. For the true collector!
Vallauris Ceramics
Although vases by Fiorini Pugi are often called French or Italian, that is not quite correct, but the confusion is understandable. Monaco lies between France and Italy and the style of the Pugi vases is actually French because of their production in Vallauris.
Just under 50 km from Monaco is the French artists' village of Vallauris. This place has hosted many ceramists since the beginning of the last century. Around the 1950s, Pablo Picasso also came to the town. At the time, the arrival of this artist worked like a magnet on other creators.
During the same period, creativity exploded in the town and many extraordinary works appeared. Pugi's vases are characterized by the style vases that also came from Vallauris, and they may have been made there as well. Unfortunately, to date we have been unable to find exclusive evidence of this, but the clues are there.
