A beautiful creation by Gabriel Fourmaintraux, this large cherry jar is part of the revival of Desvres faience during the 1950s and 1960s, when forms derived from traditional French domestic uses adopted freer, graphic, and resolutely modern decorations. Gabriel Fourmaintraux belongs to one of the great families of faience makers in Desvres, a major ceramic center in northern France. Heir to expertise developed over several generations, he contributed to the renewal of the family's production in the 20th century by developing an immediately recognizable repertoire, where color, the painter's brushwork, and the simplification of motifs play an essential role. This white glazed faience pot is a beautiful illustration of this. Its generous silhouette echoes that of large traditional storage jars, with a cylindrical body, gently rounded shoulders, and a short neck ending in a thick molded rim. Measuring approximately 21 cm in height and 9 cm in diameter at the opening, the piece has a particularly decorative presence. The front bears the handwritten inscription "Cerises" (Cherries), accompanied by an entirely hand-painted floral composition. The stylized flowers and foliage blend deep blue, olive green, orange-yellow, and brown in a spontaneous design characteristic of 1960s aesthetics. The basket, rendered in a few broad strokes, and the freely drawn vegetal forms give the whole piece that graphic freshness sought after in post-war French ceramics. The handwritten signature "GF fait main" (GF handmade) on the base links the piece to Gabriel Fourmaintraux's production and emphasizes the artisanal nature of its decoration. Preserved in very good condition, with no cracks or chips, the pot features a beautiful glossy glaze and a remarkably fresh decoration, with vibrant and luminous colors. A beautiful piece by Gabriel Fourmaintraux from Desvres, both utilitarian and decorative, representative of 1960s French ceramics, today sought after for the simplicity of its forms and the freedom of its painted designs.
