Product description
We are pleased to present an outstanding example of the "Black & White" pendant lamp, designed in 1965 by the masters of Italian design Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Flos. This is not simply a lamp; it is a sophisticated lighting device that lets you create two entirely different atmospheres within a single object.
The name "Black & White" refers to its two modes of light emission.
"White" effect: a warm, diffused and enveloping light, achieved through the wide opaline dome.
"Black" effect: an intense light directed downward, perfect for dining tables or work surfaces. This effect is produced by the iconic corrugated cup in natural mirror-polished aluminium, positioned at the base of the diffuser.
The design incorporates an ingenious internal structure. The central corrugated aluminium insert is designed to house a bulb with a silvered crown, maximising reflection without causing glare. This technical rigour, combined with the poetic form of the dome, makes it one of the most innovative pendant lamps in the history of 20th-century lighting.
This piece is in excellent condition.
The dome: perfectly white and glossy, with no scratches, yellowing or cracks.
The aluminium insert: the corrugated mirror finish is in excellent condition, with light scratches that do not affect its appearance, retaining its original 1960s lustre.
Functionality: the wiring has been properly re-done and is fully functional. It allows separate lighting circuits (the central "black" light and the peripheral "white" lights can be switched on independently).
