Product description
Document - Extremely Rare Document: The Army of Crime, Red Poster - 1944 Excellent Extremely rare copy of the pamphlet "The Army of Crime," distributed at the same time as the Red Poster. This iconic poster, an image of the Resistance, complemented the pamphlet's distribution as part of an antisemitic and xenophobic propaganda campaign orchestrated by the occupying forces. This pamphlet, distributed in the format of a 14-page illustrated newspaper with photographs, is one of the only sources of historical information on the trial of the 23 resistance fighters from Missak Manouchian's group. It was published in February 1944 by the Center for Anti-Bolshevik Studies (CEA). Very few copies of these documents remain today, as they were fragile and most were destroyed in retaliation. This pamphlet is therefore a major historical artifact and a rare source of information on this crime committed by the occupying forces. Almost nothing else is known about the trial of the "Manouchian Group," of which only the verdict and the famous letters from the condemned men to their families survive in the archives. It is thanks to this pamphlet that some details of this secret trial have come down to us. This pamphlet is in exceptional condition, its previous owner having protected it with a half-morocco binding with corners. The spine is decorated with the title of the pamphlet and the name of the former owner (gilt tooling). The binding was done by the bookbinder Antoine Tiessen of Villers-les-Nancy. The original cover of the pamphlet has been preserved. The owner listed in the book is Jean-Marie-Pierre Daul, a member of the Free French Forces, arrested on March 31, 1943, by the DST (Directorate of Territorial Surveillance) on the orders of the Sicherheitspolizei (Security Police) in Marseille. He escaped and went underground (pseudonym Jean-Pierre Didion). After the Liberation, he founded the Association of Alsatians and Lorrainers who resisted and escaped military and paramilitary conscription in Strasbourg. This is a piece of history, a key moment in the French Resistance, a fragment of this essential memory that culminated on February 21, 2024, with the interment of Melinée and Manouchian in the Panthéon.
