It's thanks to painter Evert Rabbers that Twente now knows what those idyllic spots, now sacrificed to progress, must have looked like in the past. He drew and painted dozens of them. The Twente and Achterhoek countryside, the eastern inner cities, the animal world, but also the people of the region were his sources of inspiration. Evert Rabbers was a professional photographer, but his true passion lay in painting. He was no loner; he formed a drawing club with his Twente artist friends, which would later become the Twentse Kunstkring (Twente Art Circle). Rabbers himself never sought much prominence. He was a modest man, with a stooped posture. But he certainly didn't lack for recognition, even before the Second World War. He made a name for himself in Twente, nationally, and even internationally. He was a member of the Hague painters' society St. Lucas and exhibited there. He sold work as far as England and was also popular in Germany.
