For sale is a beautiful, small dish/business card holder/dish/ashtray/business card dish/ash tray. It was designed and made by Eva von Stössel of Dresden-Hellerau around 1920. The underside is marked with the workshop mark and the model numbers 860 A and 11. It has a round brass base with a raised rim engraved with floral motifs. Dimensions: Height approx. 2 cm, Length approx. 12 cm, Depth approx. 12 cm.
Eva von Stössel worked as a metalworker for the Deutsche Werkstätten (German Workshops) in Hellerau and was a member of the Deutscher Werkbund (German Association of Craftsmen). From 1922 until his escape from the Nazis, she was married to Georg von Mendelssohn. Her works are among those held in the collections of the Kunstgewerbemuseum Dresden (Museum of Decorative Arts Dresden).
Georg Mendelssohn was a German craftsman, metal artist, and goldsmith. He was born in Dorpat in 1886 and died in Baden-Baden in 1955. He was a member of the Deutscher Werkbund (German Association of Craftsmen). He produced many designs for the Deutsche Werkstätten (German Workshops). Important contemporaries of his included Richard Riemerschmid, Franz Kafka, Rainer Maria Rilke, Franz Werfel, and Oskar Kokoschka.
Condition commensurate with age, with signs of age and use (scratches, abrasions, some light residue, traces of oxidation, and occasional minor deformations).
