The architect and designer Ettore Sottsass was born in Innsbruck, Austria, in 1917 and grew up in Milan. He studied architecture at the Polytechnic University of Turin until his graduation in 1939. As a member of the Italian army, he spent most of World War II in a Yugoslavian concentration camp. In 1947, he opened his first studio in Milan and, in addition to participating in postwar reconstruction, focused on interior design and exhibition design.
In 1958, he began working for Olivetti and designed several highly distinctive pieces—including Valentine, the iconic red plastic grater from 1969—transforming the large, cold office equipment of the time into playful, accessible machines.
Sottsass spent part of the 1960s in both India, which fascinated him with its vibrant colors, and the United States, where he was captivated by Pop Art. In 1973, he co-founded Global Tools, an experimental design collective, alongside Gaetano Pesce, Alessandro Mendini, and others. During the 1970s, he collaborated with Alessi, Baccarat, and Knoll, designing everyday objects such as spice sets and carafes.
In 1980, he founded the architecture and design firm Sottsass Associati, and in 1981, the Memphis Group, an influential and extravagant design company known for its colorful, luminous postmodern furniture, ceramics, and lamps. He worked for the group until 1985, when he returned to architecture and died at the age of 90.
