Product description
This rare spherical watering can was designed around 1953/54 by Ernest Hofmann-Igl and produced by the Hessian Majolica Factory Fritz Dienes in Mühlheim am Main.
The spherical ceramic body is glazed in black and white with small yellow accents. The long, elegantly curved spout and the arched handle are made of brass. The unusual combination of ceramic and metal gives the watering can the appearance of a small modern sculpture.
This model is also known as a "sphere waterer" or cactus watering can. The particularly long and narrow spout allowed for the precise watering of small plants and cacti. Today, this rare object is considered a characteristic example of German Mid-Century design from the early 1950s.

Very good original condition for its age, with a light patina and normal signs of wear on the brass parts. There are two minimal superficial chips in the glaze on the unglazed base. These are not visible when the piece is displayed and are fully documented in the detailed photographs.
The base is unmarked. Attribution is based on the characteristic shape, the combination of materials, the color scheme, and documented comparable pieces of this model.
A rare, sculptural collector's item for enthusiasts of Mid-Century Modern, German post-war modernism, and exceptional ceramic design.
