Each side is meticulously carved with lakeside landscapes, Chinese junks gliding on the water, and lush vegetation. This narrative continuity makes this object a rare piece. The lid and sides depict the figure of the Confucian scholar. Represented in pavilions, these sages embody wisdom, contemplation, and harmony with nature, while the junks symbolize travel, making this box a true philosophical artifact. The object features traditional dovetail joinery on all corners, ensuring exceptional sturdiness and authentic craftsmanship. The domed lid is adorned with a traditional brass clasp. Attributed to marine craftsmanship, this type of box was traditionally brought back by officers and sailors during their stopovers in Chinese ports in the 19th century. (Personal acquisition dating back approximately forty years) A single-piece storage compartment, revealing the silky, untreated grain of the camphor wood. The aromatic and protective natural scent of this wood is still present upon opening, confirming its quality. Its excellent overall condition testifies to its age. The wood has naturally "moved" with time: the lid has a very slight natural offset, and the base bears the marks of the object's history. These structural variations are undeniable proof of the authenticity and age of a century-old piece of solid wood. Dimensions: approximately 25.5 x 15 x 13 cm. Weight: 1069 grams.
