Product description
Print, Artist's Proof, “Composition in Red” Gerardo Rueda, 1970 – Spain An exceptional print, artist's proof, on paper, signed and dated by the renowned sculptor and painter Gerardo Rueda. Titled “Composition in Red.” Despite its small size, the work's power is undeniable, emanating from the contrast between the chosen colors. Gerardo Rueda Salaberri (Madrid, 1926–1996) was a sculptor and painter, one of the essential figures in the history of Spanish abstraction and, along with his friend and fellow painter Fernando Zóbel and Gustavo Torner, founder of the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art in Cuenca. His path toward abstraction began during the 1940s, through geometric forms. His works still retained clear references to his early landscapes, but already hinted at his definitive foray into pure abstract forms, beginning in the 1970s. The emergence of monochrome paintings marked a turning point in his career. He was particularly drawn to Italian Spatialism, which he encountered during his trip to Italy in 1960 as the Spanish representative at the 30th Venice Biennale. He then began to develop a style of painting more closely related to the Italian, French, German, and American monochrome painters than to his compatriots dedicated to Informalism. Some of his most evident influences include the French Support-Surface group and the work of Italians such as Lucio Fontana. The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía presented an exhibition of his collages in 1997. More than 180 works traced the artist's extensive career, from his figurative beginnings to his final creations.
