Product description
This exceptional chest of drawers is a decorative piece of furniture of Chinese origin from the mid-19th century and bears clearly recognizable features of the late Qing dynasty.
The body is made of dark-stained elm wood and has a rectangular, rectilinear shape with short, narrow legs.
The ornate, hand-painted front is particularly noteworthy:
Two double doors in rich vermilion are adorned with finely crafted landscape scenes with gilded figures, pavilions, trees and mountains.
The motifs are reminiscent of classic Chinese court and everyday scenes in a rural setting. The picture surface is framed by floral and butterfly-like gold ornaments on a black background, which also include the lower decorative strips and sides.
The doors are each fitted with a traditional, dark Chinese brass fitting, including locking with ring handles. The interior is functionally divided by a full-length shelf and is finished entirely in dark wood. The chest of drawers has no hinges on the doors, they are simply bolts that hold the door in the correct position. The cabinet doors can therefore be easily removed and replaced.
