A beautiful and rare antique Egyptian Revival majolica pitcher (ewer), made by the renowned Austro-Bohemian manufacturer Gerbing & Stephan around 1880. This museum-worthy object is a magnificent example of the nineteenth-century Neo-Style. The front features a beautifully detailed, three-dimensional sphinx or pharaoh face that flows smoothly into the handle. The body is richly decorated with stylized lotus flowers, fine braiding, and a winged snake on the shoulder. The deep, lustrous majolica colors (olive green, deep blue, and terracotta) are typical of this period and manufacturer. Specifications: * Manufacturer: Gerbing & Stephan (Bodenbach, Austria/Czech Republic) * Period: Circa 1880 (19th-century antique) * Material: Majolica (glazed earthenware) * Style: Egyptian Revival * Mark on bottom: Fully marked with the official factory stamp ‘G. & St.’, model number ‘3841 / Z’ and a blind stamp (circle with cross). Condition: The jug is in beautiful, authentic antique condition. There is a minuscule, barely noticeable chip near the spout (see detail photo). Otherwise, the object is completely intact, without breaks or old restorations. A beautiful and honest collector's item.
