Product description
This sculptural ceramic table lamp was produced by Doria Leuchten in Germany during the 1970s. Combining a strongly textured ceramic body with a spherical opaline glass globe, the lamp reflects the expressive character of 1970s Space Age design while incorporating the earthy colours and tactile surfaces typical of the period. The ceramic body is formed as a sweeping crescent that curves around the opaline globe. Its substantial, organic shape creates an almost protective enclosure around the light source, with the upper section extending above the globe and the lower section forming an integrated base. Deep horizontal textures follow the curvature of the ceramic and emphasise the sculptural quality of the design. The earthy brown glaze varies naturally across the textured surface, ranging from lighter warm tones to deeper brown areas. This deliberately tactile finish contrasts with the smooth, pure geometry of the spherical opaline glass. The relationship between these two elements gives the lamp much of its character: an organic, almost primitive ceramic form surrounding a simple luminous sphere. When illuminated, the opaline glass softly diffuses the light and creates a warm atmospheric glow. The globe also emphasises the distinctly Space Age character of the design, while the ceramic body gives the lamp a warmer and more natural presence than many lighting designs associated with the style. Doria was established in Germany in 1945 and developed into a prominent manufacturer of decorative lighting. From its production facilities near Fürth, the company became particularly known for its creative use of glass and expressive lighting forms. During the post-war decades, Doria produced an extensive range of table lamps, floor lamps, wall lights and chandeliers and collaborated with German designers including Wilhelm Braun-Feldweg. This table lamp is a characteristic example of Doria’s more sculptural 1970s lighting, bringing together geometric and organic forms in a compact design. The lamp has been rewired and fitted with a new opaline glass globe.
