Early Bauhaus High-Back Lounge Chair, attributed to Veha, The Hague, 1930s
This striking high-back armchair is a rare Dutch Bauhaus lounge chair, very likely produced by Veha, the tubular-steel label of J.B. van Heijst & Zonen in The Hague in the early 1930s. The sculptural frame shows an earlier, more architectural construction than the better-known AF1 model: heavy-gauge tubular steel forms a continuous sled base with triangular side profiles, reinforced by additional struts and bolted details. The result is a chair that looks industrial and technical, yet has a soft, gentle spring when you sit down.
The seat and back are made from a single sling of thick natural leather that wraps around the frames and is stitched along the sides. Together with the solid wooden armrests, this gives the piece a warm, almost artisan character that beautifully balances the machine-age steel. The subtly reclined back and low seat create a very relaxed “men’s lounge” posture that clearly echoes the work of Marcel Breuer and other Bauhaus pioneers.
The patina on this chair is exceptional. The galvanized tubular frame shows a fine, even speckling and soft discolouration from decades of use, with small traces of wear around the feet and joints that underline its industrial origins rather than detract from it. The leather has aged into a deep camel-tan tone with natural colour variations, darkened areas and light creasing. These marks of time give the chair a richness and depth that new upholstery simply cannot replicate; they turn the surface into almost a landscape of use.
Structurally the chair is solid and ready for use, with the frame stable and the leather still supple. The wear is consistent with age and intensive but careful use and will appeal to collectors with appreciation for character.
Veha’s tubular furniture was produced only for a short period in the early 1930s, which makes surviving examples scarce. Combined with this uncommon early frame variant and its beautiful, original patina, this lounge chair is a highly desirable piece for collectors of Bauhaus and Dutch modernism, and a strong sculptural accent in any interior.
