Super lamp by Philips - design by Louis Kalff - from the 1950s - industrial design in the shape of a UFO - the plastic diffuser is not entirely round but has stood the test of time well - beautiful porcelain socket - the wiring has been renewed. The lamp has some small rust spots on the top, however, they are not bothersome – a great design that rarely comes to market.
Louis Kalff started working for the advertising department at Philips in 1925. Under his leadership, the Lighting Advisory Bureau (LIBU) was founded in 1929. Kalff was also the designer of the Philips logo.
After the Second World War, Kalff was actively involved in industrial design at Philips. The NB92 pendant lamp came from his drawing board during that period. The diffuser ensures that the light is beautifully scattered so that you do not have to look directly into the lamp.
This pendant lamp from the NB series is an iconic design by Louis Kalff for Philips, produced in the Netherlands during the 1950s. The recognizable 'UFO' silhouette reflects the fascination with space travel and aerodynamics characteristic of the Space Age era.
The lamp is made of metal and finished in a cream-colored lacquer. The design is characterized by a wide, saucer-shaped shade with a layered top and an inner diffuser that ensures a soft, diffused light output. The fixture is equipped with a metal suspension chain and a brass-colored ceiling rose. The original Philips brand label, stating 'Made in Holland', is still present on the housing.
The fixture is in a worn condition with a distinct patina that testifies to its age and industrial past. The original finish has been preserved, contributing to the authentic character of this vintage piece.
This lamp comes into its own perfectly in an industrial or eclectic interior. The design forms a striking centerpiece above a dining table or in a workspace, where it offers both functional lighting and a piece of Dutch design history.
