Product description
This refined artwork, titled 'The Little Chapel', is a creation by the renowned artist Dirk Baksteen. The work depicts a serene, rural scene characteristic of his oeuvre, emphasizing rustic architecture and the understated, expansive landscape. Dirk Baksteen was born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, in 1886 and died in Antwerp in 1971. He acquired Belgian nationality in 1932. He was the son of Dirk Baksteen and Jansje van Heiningen. He grew up in a family of ten children and had to help support the family as a house painter. Like his brother Gerard, he became a painter at a young age. On the advice of this brother, Baksteen ended up in Antwerp in 1912. Due to his stay in Mol, Baksteen is considered part of the Mol School. Many of his works also depict the Kempen region, such as this etching of a Kempen farmhouse. He was a painter, but primarily an etcher and graphic artist. He received his education at the Academies in Rotterdam and Antwerp. Lived in Mol from 1912 to 1944; in early 1913, Jakob Smits provided him with a residence behind the Malvinahof. Became a friend and follower of J. Smits. Worked from 1920 onwards at his Mariahoeve in Achterbos, where, among other things, the etching collections ‘De Heilige Kempen’ (1922) and ‘1886-1936’ (1936) were created, and where he hosted numerous artists and art connoisseurs such as J. Muls and J. Lebeer. Acquired Belgian nationality in 1932. With his poetic Kempen landscapes, he may be regarded as the most important artist from Mol after Smits. The work from his post-war Antwerp years is also still largely inspired by Achterbos. Mentioned in CRICK, BAS I, and Twee eeuwen signaturen van Belgische kunstenaars. The detailed depiction of rural life makes this an attractive piece for lovers of classical landscape art. The work is executed with precision on paper and is presented in a dark wooden frame, safely protected behind glass. The composition depicts a traditional farmhouse with a voluminous thatched roof and a small chapel mounted on a blue post. The soft color palette of blue, green, white, and various earth tones conveys a soothing atmosphere. The artist's signature and the handwritten title of the work are clearly legible at the bottom, confirming the provenance and authenticity of this print. The artwork is in good condition, with a character that has gracefully withstood the test of time. The colors have retained their original depth, and the framing offers a sturdy, fitting presentation with a light, natural aging that respects the historical aspect of the work. This figurative work forms an understated and cultural addition to a variety of spaces. It comes into its own particularly well in a rural, classic, or eclectic setting, for example in a quiet study, an inviting hallway, or an atmospheric living room, where it introduces a subtle sense of nostalgia.
