A plate full of character, heir to one of the most whimsical decors of the great Provençal faience tradition. This beautiful decorative faience plate reinterprets the famous Moustiers grotesque repertoire, whose golden age dates back to the 18th century. At its center appears a theatrical character in costume, captured in motion, with a sword extended before him. Around this small scene unfolds abundant vegetation populated by stylized flowers and insects. This slightly extravagant world belongs to the imagination of grotesques, these compositions where characters, animals, insects, and plants meet with an almost mischievous freedom. In Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, this repertoire was notably championed in the 18th century by Joseph Olérys, whose creations largely contributed to the renown of Moustiers faience. This plate is part of the continuity of this decorative tradition, in a later 20th-century interpretation. The color palette is particularly successful. Olive green, brown, ochre, and manganese stand out against a slightly warm cream background. The central character retains all the whimsy of the old models, while the vegetal decoration, arranged around the rim, forms a true frame. The scalloped shape of the plate also deserves attention. Its undulating edge is highlighted by fine colored lines that follow the curves of the faience and give it a beautiful presence when displayed. Diameter approximately 25 cm. This plate shows several small chips and signs of wear, notably visible on the reverse side and on some parts of the edge. These marks are photographed and do not detract from its charm when presented from the front. A piece that one can easily imagine hung alone on a wall, integrated into a composition of antique faience, or simply placed on a display stand, like a small ceramic painting. Beyond its primary function, it retains something of that Provence of faience workshops where, for several centuries, flowers, characters, and whimsical creatures have told their stories on enameled earth.
