This 22-volume set comprises 'The Works of J. van den Vondel', edited by Mr. J. van Lennep and revised by J.H.W. Unger. The books date from circa 1890 and form an impressive collection of the literary legacy of one of the most important Dutch writers and poets.
The books are bound in rich, burgundy bindings with elaborate gold-colored decorations on both the spine and the front. The detailed patterns and typography reflect the classical bookbinding art of the late nineteenth century. The set was published in Ghent by S. Leliaert, A. Siffer & Co. and includes, among other things, illustrations and title prints from the first editions.
The set is in good condition, commensurate with its age. The bindings have retained their original character and the gold print is still clear. Some natural discoloration of the paper is visible, which contributes to the authentic appearance of these antique books.
This book series is a valuable addition to a classic library or study. The decorative bands make it not only a literary possession but also a striking visual element in a traditional or eclectic interior.
