Product description
A Danish bookcase designed by Henning Kjærnulf in the 1960s, made from oak-veneered furniture board. The piece combines the simplicity of form characteristic of Danish design with a well-thought-out organisation of space — closed storage compartments harmonise here with open display shelves, creating a functional whole in the warm, honey-coloured tones of oak.
The design is based on a two-part structure. The lower section houses a lockable cupboard with doors adorned with a geometric division into rectangular panels — a distinctive motif that lends the fronts a sense of depth without excessive ornamentation. The upper section combines open shelves with glazed doors, the glass panes of which are finished with a decorative division into smaller sections. Oval-shaped handles emphasise the organic character of the design. Adjustable shelves allow the interior layout to be adapted to the items being stored, whilst the entire structure retains the proportions typical of Danish furniture design of that period — balanced, yet not heavy.
Henning Kjærnulf is one of a group of Danish designers who, in the 1960s, developed the concept of functional furniture with a simple yet refined form. He designed furniture characterised by clean lines and meticulous finishing. The oak veneers he frequently used are part of a broader tradition of Scandinavian design that values the warmth of natural wood and the precision of craftsmanship. Danish furniture design of this period focused on making good design accessible to all — the furniture was meant to be beautiful, but above all practical for everyday life.
This bookcase will work equally well in a living room, a study or a dining room. The closed cupboards provide space for documents, records or small items that need not be on display, whilst the open shelves and glass-fronted compartments allow books, ceramics or mementos to be showcased. A depth of fifty centimetres provides space for photo albums and larger items.
The bookcase is in good condition, with minor scratches and scuffs typical of furniture from the 1960s. Minor chips have been repaired. More significant signs of wear are also shown in the photographs to give the most accurate representation of the furniture’s actual condition.
