Weight: 1.9 kg Width including handle: 20 cm Design: Marianne Starck for Michael Andersen & Son, Bornholm, Denmark. Circa 1960. In truly beautiful condition. No damage. (Ceramic designed by Marianne Starck for Michael Andersen & Son, Bornholm, Denmark. Persian crackle glaze. Incised triangle fish mark, artist initials MS. With original label.) +++++++++++++++++++++++ Marianne Starck (1931–2007) was one of the key figures responsible for the success of Michael Andersen & Son ceramics in the second half of the 20th century. She was born in Germany and trained at Joachim Thom's pottery workshop in Holstein. Later, she studied graphic design at the Hamburg State School of Art. In 1955, she moved to the Danish island of Bornholm and became Art Director at Michael Andersen & Son, a position she held until the pottery closed in 1993. Over nearly four decades, she created remarkable ceramics—stoneware, tableware sets, and reliefs—many of which have become style icons and highly sought-after collector's items. Pieces made by Marianne Starck are usually signed MS and marked with the Michael Andersen & Søn logo (three fish in a triangular coat of arms). +++++++++++++++++++++++ Michael Andersen Denmark – Marianne Starck & The Persia Glaze While the award winning and amazing “Persia” glaze at Michael Andersen & Sons was developed in the 1930s by Daniel Andersen (1885-1959) and used on pieces from that date, I think it is the designs of Marianne Starck at MAS & Sons in the 1950s and 1960s where the Persia glaze is seen at its best. This complex glaze turns out differently on each piece, depending on the glaze colors used and style of decoration. Sometimes it appears like a pearlescent multi colored micro-mosaic, and at other times as a more subtle pattern decoration with gray pearlescent hues. Often the pieces using this glaze have beautiful but subtle oxidization of the glaze, giving some of the colors a slightly metallic appearance – especially noticeable on the red color of the Viking longboat in the first image below. The glaze is also surprisingly smooth and silky to the touch. The Persia glaze was used on all types of forms – from utilitarian pieces to sculptural forms. +++++++++++++++++++++++
