The symbol for Dalarna and nowadays also for Sweden is the Dalarna horse.
The only truly world-famous wooden horses are made in Nusnäs, near Mora, by the Olsson family. The Dalarna horse has been made and sold all over the world for more than 350 years.
In earlier times, various children's toys were carved from wood during the long winter evenings as a cottage industry. This is how the Dalarna horses came into being, in all kinds of sizes and colors.
The symbol became popular because during the 1939 World's Fair in New York, people wanted an eye-catcher for the entrance to the Swedish pavilion. This became a very large, wooden horse measuring 2 meters 80 high. This received such an enthusiastic response that small replicas of this horse were made on a large scale. Many variations of these little horses have been made to this day.
The horse is still largely hand-carved from wood and painted entirely by hand. As a result, no two horses are the same. The production process can be followed during a company visit to Nils Olsson.
