Product description
Czech Brutalist Glass Vase in Green and Amber – Attributed to Vladislav Urban or Rudolf Jurnikl for Sklo Union, ca. 1968–72 This striking mid-century glass vase is an evocative example of Czech Brutalist design, likely produced by Rosice Glassworks (part of the Sklo Union collective) in the late 1960s or early 1970s. While unsigned, its formal language and production technique are characteristic of works by Vladislav Urban (b. 1937) or Rudolf Jurnikl (1935–2021)—two of the most influential figures in postwar Czechoslovak industrial glass design. Urban and Jurnikl were both active contributors to Sklo Union, the revolutionary state-owned consortium that sought to democratize modern design through mass production without sacrificing artistic quality. Their designs—often realized in pressed soda-lime glass—merged architectural clarity with sculptural surface modulation, turning utilitarian vessels into tactile, optical experiences. The vase offered here features a rectangular footprint and thick walls infused with fused tones of emerald green and amber brown (a variant of the Sommerso technique). Its surfaces are embossed with bold, geometric reliefs: ridged, mirrored, and distorted like tectonic structures or Brutalist facades. This language of modularity, repetition, and abstraction is strongly reminiscent of Urban’s Series 981 and 983 for Rosice, and of Jurnikl’s cube-based textures from Hermanova Hut. Technical Details: Height: 20.5 cm Base: approx. 9.5 × 8.5 cm Weight: approx. 1.7 kg Material: thick-walled pressed glass Color: clear with internal fusions of green and brown Technique: semi-automated mold-blown (Sklo Union standard) Condition: excellent vintage condition; no chips or cracks, only minimal shelf wear at base This is a visually assertive, physically substantial object—an ideal piece for collectors of Czech glass, Brutalist design, or avant-garde mid-century decorative arts. A beautiful standalone piece or a powerful accent within a curated group. General Information Please explore our profile for more vintage vases!
