Quiet poetry in porcelain: the leaf as memory, the vase as sculpture
A refined pairing from Rosenthal’s Studio-Linie collection, these two ceramic vases from the Silva series embody a delicate yet confident approach to design: nature abstracted, form reduced, craftsmanship foregrounded. Created by Antje Brüggemann-Breckwoldt in the 1980s, the “Silva” pieces remain some of the most contemplative works within Rosenthal’s artistic production of the late 20th century.
Both vases are formed in creamy high-fired porcelain with sculptural relief leaves wrapping the bodies—organic contours enhanced by soft, naturalistic glazing in celadon green, slate grey, and earth tones. The taller vase (23.5 cm) presents a vertical rhythm of overlapping leaves and an elegantly undulating rim; the more compact vase (17.5 cm) echoes similar forms in a more introspective volume with symmetrical leaf impressions on all four sides.

About the Artist: Antje Brüggemann-Breckwoldt
Trained as a sculptor and ceramicist in the postwar West German tradition, Antje Brüggemann-Breckwoldt belonged to a generation of women artists who subtly but significantly shaped the design language of German domestic objects. Active during the 1970s and 1980s, her work combines biomorphic clarity with technical precision, often exploring themes of nature, growth, and haptics.
Unlike the brutalist or geometric tendencies of her male contemporaries, Brüggemann-Breckwoldt brought a quiet sensuality to her forms — emphasizing touch, asymmetry, and restrained emotion. Her Silva series for Rosenthal is an homage to leaves not merely as decorative motifs, but as memory traces: fossil-like imprints of life. These pieces recall the ceramic reliefs of Hans Kühn and early studio work by Margarethe Friedlaender, yet retain their own lyrical autonomy.
Though not as widely known as figures like Tapio Wirkkala or Bjørn Wiinblad, her contributions to Rosenthal’s Studio-Linie were emblematic of the era’s turn toward nature-inspired, sculptural object design, and deserve renewed recognition.
