With its spectacular ears standing tall towards the sky and its mischievously charming silhouette, this rabbit is one of those creations that beautifully recount the golden age of French decoration from the 1960s and 1970s. It originates from the Cristallerie de Vannes-le-Châtel, one of the historic strongholds of Lorraine's glass art. Founded in 1765, the glassworks belongs to that formidable tradition of glass born in Lorraine in the 18th century, alongside the great manufacturers that would establish the region's international reputation. From the 1930s onwards, Vannes-le-Châtel further developed its decorative creations and reached a new milestone in 1963 with the production of crystal. It is within this particularly creative period that this rabbit fits. Everyday objects became sculptures, animal forms entered living rooms, and crystal momentarily abandoned the solemnity of tableware to become much more free and joyful. Its body is powerfully sculpted from a generous and perfectly transparent material. The snout, eyes, paws, and small tail emerge from the reliefs, while its two immense ears, stretched from the material, give the silhouette all its elegance. Light enters the crystal, passes through the different thicknesses, breaks on the curves, and reveals small, almost rainbow-like sparkles. Depending on where it is placed, the rabbit literally changes its appearance. Its hollowed body forms a catch-all tray, characteristic of an era when decorative objects were often given a function. On a dressing table, it will hold a few pieces of jewelry. In an entryway, it can hold small items one deposits upon returning home. Placed alone on a console or coffee table, it primarily becomes a true animal crystal sculpture.
