With its spectacular ears pointed skyward and its mischievous silhouette, this rabbit is one of those creations that wonderfully recounts the golden age of French decoration from the 1960s and 1970s. It comes from the Vannes-le-Châtel Crystalworks, one of the historical strongholds of Lorraine glassmaking art. Founded in 1765, the glassworks belongs to that formidable glass tradition born in Lorraine in the 18th century, alongside the great factories that would establish the region's international reputation. From the 1930s, Vannes-le-Châtel further developed its decorative creations and reached a new milestone in 1963 with the production of crystal. It is within this particularly creative period that this rabbit fits. Everyday objects become sculptures, animal forms enter living rooms, and crystal momentarily abandons the solemnity of tableware to become much more free and joyful. Its body is powerfully sculpted from a generous and perfectly transparent material. The snout, eyes, paws, and small tail emerge from the contours, while its two immense ears, stretched within the material, lend all their elegance to the silhouette. Light enters the crystal, passes through the varying thicknesses, refracts off the curves, and reveals small, almost rainbow-like sparkles. Depending on where it is placed, the rabbit literally changes its appearance. Its hollowed body forms a catch-all dish, characteristic of that era when decorative objects were often given a function. On a dressing table, it will hold a few pieces of jewelry. In an entryway, it will hold the small items one sets down upon arriving home. Placed alone on a console or coffee table, it primarily becomes a true animal crystal sculpture. A luminous and highly personal creation from Vannes-le-Châtel, a testament to a particularly charming period in 20th-century French decorative arts. Height approximately 21 cm.
