A nearly life-size sculpted white Carrara marble statue of the Crouching Venus. This copy of the iconic Hellenistic original is based on a work attributed to the sculptor Doidalsas (200–100 BC). Copies of the Crouching Venus are exhibited, among other places, in the British Museum (Room 23, centrepiece) and in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (object no. BK-1991-33).
The sculpture depicts the goddess Venus during her bath, attempting to shield her nakedness and looking down in embarrassment as she is caught off guard. Particularly beautiful is the ambiguous smile of a woman who knows she is being admired for her beauty.
Many such statues have been found during excavations in Italy and France, a sign of their popularity. Works of this type were also often produced for wealthy buyers during their so-called Grand Tour in Italy.
