Piet Hein Eek - 'Crisis Chair'
The 'Crisis Chair' is one of Piet Hein Eek's earliest and most emblematic designs. Designed during his student days at the Design Academy Eindhoven, the chair arose from the need to create functional and thoughtful furniture with limited resources.
Made from leftover wood and simple joints, the Crisis Chair embodies the core of Eek's design philosophy: honest use of materials, visible construction and an aversion to excess. Each one bears the marks of manual production, and variations in wood and finish make each chair unique.
The design is at once rugged and refined. The straight lines and austere design refer to both necessity and aesthetics. In times of scarcity or economic uncertainty, this chair shows how limitation can lead to inventiveness and beauty.
An early work that would later form the basis for Eek's international reputation as a designer of recycled materials and sustainable objects.
