Ilmari Tapiovaara was a Finnish interior architect and designer. He was also a visiting professor at the famous Illinois Institute of Technology. In his early creative period, while still a student in Helsinki, he worked in Alvar Aalto's studio in London. After graduating, he was an assistant to LeCorbusier in Paris. In the early 1950s, Tapiovaara and his wife Annikki opened their own studio in Helsinki. Between 1951 and 1960, Ilmari Tapiovaara received six gold medals at the Milan Triennale for his designs – more than any other designer. In 1971, he received the Finnish State Prize for Design. Tapiovaara designed the Crinolette Chair in 1962, based on his famous Mademoiselle Chair. Ilmari Tapiovaara died in Helsinki in 1999. The chair is in very good condition with slight signs of wear. The chair comes from the estate of the literary critic Fritz J.Raddatz.
