Product description
Description Crewel work is a surface embroidery technique over 1000 years old, performed with fine wool on a firm base (in this case, jute). Because the wool is heavy, it features dense patterns and floral motifs, freehand stitching (no counted cross-stitch patterns), and unique stitches designed to create flat, raised, relief-like designs. It is also known as Jacobean embroidery. It is used in home decor and clothing. The Bayeux Tapestry (11th century, exhibited in France) is a famous example. The reason for the decline in popularity of this embroidery is the enormous time and cost involved. Large-scale projects take many hours or weeks, and with the invention of embroidery machines in the 19th century, patterns could be produced quickly and cheaply. Hand embroidery was long dismissed as old-fashioned in an era of minimalist trends with geometric designs. Now, this technique is experiencing a renaissance. Gucci and Alexander McQueen incorporate crewel elements into their collections to showcase uniqueness and craftsmanship. What was once considered tame and homespun now offers the chance for tremendous visual friction. In a world of AI-driven, perfect images, crewel embroidery acts as a rebellion. In our throwaway society, showcasing invested time feels like a luxury statement, a statement against digital smoothness, a move towards the private, towards nature motifs and inner life. A conscious break with machine perfection! A re-evaluation from a "domestic hobby" to textile art. Nature is constant, it breathes, it lives, and it is simple, manageable again, and nowadays a real risk in interior design, like a musty foreign body in the gray of minimalism. Grandmillennial style: a consistent departure from cool minimalism. These dusty pieces are the next big thing; they embody time and patience, personality and history, a powerful visual element that tells a story, an avant-garde break! Sold without bamboo pole, long storage in attic, not cleaned, small stains from the wall on the back.
