There is something epic about this full-sailed galleon. The ochre and gold sails, billowed by the offshore wind, the massive hull cleaving an emerald-green sea, the arms of Hamburg proudly displayed on the main sail, St. George's cross on the foremast, the blue pennant snapping at the top of the main mast. Everything here evokes the power of the great Hanseatic merchant cities, their mastery of the North Seas, and their maritime pride. The polychrome decoration, of remarkable precision and richness of detail, is applied to a cream faience with a brilliant and deep glaze. The warm ivory background makes the reds and golds of the crest vibrate with striking intensity. The rim is outlined by a sober and elegant double black line. Nordic or German production, 1950s-1970s. Diameter 20 cm. Excellent condition, vibrant decoration, no chips.
