Continental Edison, a brand of the Thomson group, produced some of the most daring televisions in the French industry between 1965 and 1975. This is the perfect example: a black and white television with an ivory white molded plastic casing, featuring organic and generous forms, typical of 1970s French industrial design, when French designers competed with their Italian and Scandinavian counterparts. Its rounded corners, curved silhouette, and the slightly blue-green tinted screen set within a matte black frame give the piece a remarkable sculptural presence. The top surface features a chromed control panel with a bright red on/off button, a tuning slider, and six chrome-plated metal channel pre-selection buttons. The blue and white Continental Edison metal plate is affixed to the left. The back, entirely ribbed for ventilation, shows a beautiful formal coherence. It rests on a low black plastic base. Power cable and antenna included. Untested, offered as-is for decoration or to be restored to working order by an electronics technician. Placed on a low cabinet or a console, this television stands out as a design object in its own right. Its white, curved silhouette captures the eye with the same authority as a sculpture.
