He graduated from high school there in 1972. From 1972 to 1977, he studied painting and graphic arts in Munich with Prof. Hans Daucher; he completed his first and second state examinations for art teachers. He has been a freelance artist since 1978. Hercks died in Großaitingen near Augsburg at the end of 2005. Rainer Hercks' artistic career began in 1974. While studying painting and graphic arts in Munich, he participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions. After completing his first and second state examinations, he decided not to teach art, but to work as a freelance artist. Rainer Hercks generally works without sketches, as he values spontaneity. He "finds" the titles afterward by reflecting on his work. Until his death at the end of 2005, Rainer Hercks created more than 2,000 works and was one of the most popular contemporary German artists. The key elements of his work are lighthearted, ironic puns and image combinations, intended to evoke both a smile and, at times, reflection. Rainer Hercks often addressed current, serious themes, which he presented with his tireless creativity and a healthy dose of sarcasm and humor. Rainer Hercks depicted reality in a transformed and distorted way; he caricatured it. With this predilection for caricature, he gave a centuries-old form of expression a modern, contemporary feel. 1981 Hercks received the Art Prize of the City of Augsburg.
