The piece of furniture shown here is the PK66 coffee table, designed by Poul Kjærholm in 1972 for the renowned Danish manufacturer E. Kold Christensen. This model was only produced for a very short period of time - from around 1972 to 1974 - and is now one of the rarest collector's items from Kjærholm's oeuvre.
The table impresses with its clear geometry and the typically reduced design language for which Kjærholm is known. The table top is a precisely crafted square of laminated wood, covered with a fine maple veneer that is patterned in a subtle diagonal pattern. The edges are neatly chamfered and emphasize the graphic clarity of the surface.
The four legs, which are offset inwards and made of multi-layered glued and form-glued plywood, are characteristic. They are positioned in the middle of the sides of the top and are gently rounded. This solution not only gives the table a high degree of stability, but also makes the square appear almost floating - a design principle that Kjærholm often pursued in his furniture: maximum effect with minimal material presence.
The table reflects Kjærholm's striving for material justice and constructive elegance - even though this model, unlike many of his steel pieces of furniture, is made entirely of wood. It is precisely this exception that makes the PK66 particularly exciting, as it reveals his deep connection to craftsmanship and wood as a material. The construction is visibly screwed together, but the craftsmanship is very precise.
